CHAPTER 20
In the fifth month of the pregnancy, the nausea feelings that Aniyah suffered had stopped. She felt flurries of movement in her stomach, which had grown into a small bump.
During her appointment with Dr. Guess, he was prepared to reveal the sex of her baby. Nellie accepted her offer to go with her. She was all ears and prepared to report back to Powell, Sr. his new heir’s sex, but the gender was not revealed. Aniyah had informed the doctor she and Jarvis had decided to wait until the birth.
Months continued to fly by, and by the ninth month of pregnancy, Aniyah no longer could look down and see her toes. Her breasts overfilled her bra, which she did not mind. It was plenty of pleasure for her man. They, at times, witnessed how the baby stretched her stomach.
Aniyah, slouched on the sofa, turned the television from channel to channel. It was a routine she had become accustomed to on a daily basis. She refused to go out in public, unless it was for her scheduled doctor’s appointments.
Nellie busied dusting the furniture. She had played many roles: being Aniyah’s personal assistant, running errands from time to time, as well as keeping Powell, Sr. updated on Aniyah’s involvement with his son.
Exhausted from watching Nellie, Aniyah sighed. “You’re making me tired, just looking at your ass.”
“I’m doing what I get paid for.”
“Take a break. Give me a rest from looking at you.”
Nellie dropped the cleaning cloth on a cherrywood end table. “Pregnancy is keeping you grouchy. No more babies for you.”
“Girl, I’m not traveling this road again.”
Nellie giggled. “That’s what us women say.”
“I mean it.” Aniyah was disgusted.
“No need to get excited. You have a few weeks to go.”
“Girl, that’s like a year to me.”
Off the table, Nellie scanned the state newspaper. “You saw the paper today?”
“Not into news.”
Taking a seat in a recliner, Nellie turned the pages until she came to the metro session. Her eyes lit up. “It’s time for the ball at the Powell Estate.”
“That old grouch knows nothing about having a good time.”
“It’s right here in writing.” Nellie turned the page toward her.
Aniyah read the title to the article out loud. “Annual Powell Black and White Ball.” She scrambled to get up off the sofa, snatching the paper out of Nellie’s hand. She read the rest of the article. “It’s this Saturday. Invitation only.” Aniyah crunched the paper into a ball. “Damn you, Jarvis. I wasn’t invited.”
“Your man didn’t ask you to be his date? I know that hurts.”
Aniyah flung the paper on the floor. “Shut up, Nellie.”
“Don’t get mad. Stay calm for your baby.”
The housekeeper picked up the dismantled paper, placing it on the coffee table.
Aniyah sat back down. In the middle of a carpet cleaning commercial, she put the television on pause. She picked up her cell phone, keying in the number on the dial pad.
“Calling your man?”
“You got that right. His mean-headed papa probably told him not to tell me.”
The office rang a few times before the receptionist answered.
